A lady in my neighborhood keeps her horses in a five acre paddock next to my home. I have standing permission from her to haul away horse manure for my garden.
On Wednesday, March 11, 2009, my grandson Will, who is 4 years old, and I went to the horse paddock to haul away manure on a wheekbarrow. Will and I often go to the horse paddock to take the horses various foods such a corn shucks, apples, carrots and other food items they like, so naturally we have become very well known to the horses.
On this day we had apples with us for our friends. Once inside the paddock three reddish colored horses soon gathered around us for their treats. I was in the process of giving each of them an apple when I noticed a black horse on the far side of the paddock starting to run toward us. Will told me to save an apple for the black horse which I did. When the black horse arrived he took an apple from my hand and ate it.
On Wednesday, March 18, 2009 Will and I went back to the horse padock to get another wheelbarrow load of manure. We took four apples for the horses. When we arrived the three reddish horses soon arrived for their treat which they consumed. The black horse was no where to be seen.
Later in the day I saw my neighbor in the horse paddock preparing to ride so I took the occasion to walk to the fence to thank her for the manure. She of course was elated that I had gotten it because the stuff begins to pile up after a winter of feeding in the barn. I inquired of her about the whereabouts of her black horse and she informed me that Raven had died. I was shocked because I had fed him an apple only a week ago so I asked he when Raven had died. She said in October. I was totaly exasperated and told her she had to be kidding because I fed old Raven an apple only a week ago. She said she had heard that horses sometime hang around their pasture after they die.
To confirm my experience a week earlier I asked my grandson if he would tell my neighbor how many horses were there last week and he informed her there were four and added that one of them was black. It made me feel better because I was beginning to think I had dreamed the whole matter. I doubt that Raven will appear to me again now that I know he died six months ago.
