I'm Outta Here

I was about 3 years old, playing in the front yard. I wandered onto
the footpath and trod on broken glass. Naturally I screamed and cried,
and my mother came to comfort me. She carried me inside and sat me on
the kitchen bench so she could start to remove the pieces of glass. I
remember thinking - 'this has got to hurt, I'm out of here...' Then I
was on the other side of the kitchen watching Mum remove the glass from
my foot - I was calm and it felt perfectly natural. I could see 360
degrees, ie to my left, my right, ahead and behind me all at once. When
she'd taken the last of the glass out of my foot I went back. In
hindsight I think this was probably my first real experience of pain
since birth, and I simply decided not to experience it!
