In a small village in Mexico where my(Nani's) uncle used to live they said that newborns where in danger. People back then used to put sour mustard around their windows & doors (& other openings) and a cross on the babie's chest because there was a saying about a witch who seeked fresh sweet blood. He dint believe in such things, until his new first-born child died because of his arrogance. When he woke up his baby had a slash in its wrist and he was pale and there was no trace of blood in its veins.

A couple of years passed by and they decided to have another baby, but this time he heeded the warnings. He wanted to see who or what was responsible for the death of his first-born child. He did the procedures carefully; first he lay a cross on the babie's chest. Then he filled every nook & cranny with mustard. Yet he wasn't satisfied. So he left the door slightly open and then hid in the loft. He stayed ther 'till sunbreak. Suddenly he heard something trying to push the door open, he couldn't believe his eyes it was a peacock trying to get in. He jumped down and grabbed a stick and hit it. he chased it about a mile or 2 away from where he lived. As the bird lay dead on the ground he thought that he had made a mistake. Later on that morning a crowd of people was where he had last seen the bird. The bird however was gone, & in its place an old woman was found naked, beaten to death.
