Angels in Waiting

In 2001 my mother hemmorraged and nearly died. She had emergency surgery and was in a light coma in intensive care unit for 5 days. I visited my mother every day for at least 10 hours, coming in the morning and leaving as late as possible.

I am a native New Yorker and think of myself as careful and suspicious. The hospital was in a so-so area. I avoided speaking with people and almost always took a car service home. Since there were so many livery cars around the hospital, I did not always call my local car service.

One night as I was leaving through the hospital main entrance there was a couple sitting on the outdoor cement seating. They looked like they were from Central America - they had more Incan features than Spanish. She was wearing a sleeveless cotton dress with a kerchif on her head. He was wearing dark twill pants and a short-sleeved shirt. They both smiled and nodded to me and I did the same. (Throughout the entire event the woman never spoke, she only nodded when it was appropriate. The kept their eyes on me the entire time.)

I realized that there was no one around the hospital. No people passing or cars. And this hospital is on a busy street in Brooklyn. I looked down the road for a livery car. The man told me not to get in "that car". Just then a livery cab turned the corner and passed the hospital. The man told me to call the car service in my area. He assured me that they would wait with me and I was not alone. I called the car service.

The man engaged me in conversation. He said something about that I had a long day. I agreed. He went on to say that he knew why I was there and that I should not worry. My mother would be fine but she would need me from then on (this is true). I asked how he know who I was seeing. He told me he knew everything about me. He went on to tell me my name, my age, my birthday, and a little about my life. Even some thoughts I had that very day. And some of these were things no one, even my closet friends or family, would know.

Even though he was a perfect stanger, I did not wonder how he knew this. There I was having a coversation with a man I meant moments before, who knew everything about me, and I did not think anything strange about it. It felt like the most natural thing in the world. There were few people or cars passing while this conversation took place.

Eventually he said to me that my car was there. I looked and did not see anything but a second later a livery car pulled up. I stood to go and thanked him and the woman for waiting with me and keeping me company. He said I would be allright.

I entered the car and spoke with the driver. As we drove away I turned to look at the hospital and saw the man and woman were gone. During the ride home I went over the conversation and the entire event in my head and realized that, in my opinion, they must have been angels. I felt a stupid for not realizing what was going on when it was.
