In 2004 I was travelling in Thailand with a mate. We visited Kanchanaburi with a friends Thai girl friend and her mate. Kanchanaburi is a small town 3 hours West of Bangkok and is most famous for the bridge over the River Kwai.

We arrived on the Monday and opted to stay on a site that was a short ride out of the town in the countryside. The majority of the backpacking accommodation was situated in the town on the river.

I forgot of the name of the place we stayed at (it may of been White Creek) but it was newly opened and there were only 10 or so bungalows available. There was a swimming pool, restaurant and a small bar over the other side of the field. It was really out in the country with nothing but rolling hills and fields around hardly anyone was there either.

The day we arrived we found out that someone died in a car crash just outside the entrance and it took all the power out. I really didn't think anything of it. We all had a few Singha's and a few games of pool before going to bed. That night dogs were barking all night long as if they were fighting etc. There was also a strange noise that was like a cockerel but some how different. This didn't really bother me as if you have ever stayed a night in SE Asia there are all sorts of noises that go on, and as we were out in the fields I thought it was more than reasonable to expect some dogs barking and a few cockerels.

When we woke the next day our Thai friends who were staying in the bungalow next to us told us that they were really scared with the noises that went on all night. Me and my mate laughed this off and told them to stop being so stupid. All Thai's are very superstitious and all believe in ghosts so I wasn't that surprised that they were scared especially with the guy dieing.

We had a real good day visiting the bridge and museum before having some nice Thai food and again Singha's and pool. That night pretty much the same thing happened again. Dogs barked ferociously all night long and there was a very strange cockerel sound as well. Again me and my mate were totally naive to what was happening when our Thai friends told us that they were so scared that they were travelling back to Bangkok. So we decided to stay as it was a cool place, not very busy, cheap, there was good food and free pool and this was all on the site.

That night we did the usual 3 or 4 bottles of Singha and went to bed pretty early. I woke up around 1am to the sound of complete silence apart from the most bizarre cockerel that I had noticed from the previous two nights. I laid in my bed for about 20 minutes listening to the weird noise outside and remembered straight away why our Thai friends had left. The only people on the site were me and my mate, an old guy on his own and a really drunk German family who must have been comatose.

I tried to listen to my walkman but started getting a little scared. I tapped my mate on the leg and asked him if he was listening to the strange noise outside. He told me he had been awake for about an hour and thought it was really strange. I could tell he was scared and he I guess could tell I was.

The only way to describe this noise was it being 3 very loud cockerels who seemed to scream in a row one after the other in the same timing every 30 seconds. One minute they were miles away over the fields and the next they were right close to our bungalow. It was so strange and I just knew that there was something wrong with what was happening. I knew there was something very different as there was just a still silence apart from the cockerels and absolutely no dogs barking at all. Listening to this noise for hours was horrible as it was very loud and you could almost associate it with a scream.

After a few hours of waking up, I noticed that the noise started to get real close as if it was just outside. All of a sudden monkeys started screaming, dogs went mental, birds were chirping in the trees all around our bungalow. It was so crazy and it lasted for about 30 seconds. I was lying facing the window with a light from outside shining on it and I noticed as this happened my mate turned over with the cover over his head. I saw a distinct shadow of a person walk past my window. There was no noise of the stones underneath the feet. I knew my mate was as scared as me, so I kept this quiet. After the craziness had died down the noises just went back to the cockerel.

The next morning we woke and went for breakfast. My immediate question to the Thai waitress was about the noises last night. She replied "dogs see ghosts". Apparently they had to get a monk in to release this lost soul.

The scariest night of my life.
