Yesterday afternoon, as my mother was preparing to go to work, there was a person on our porch ringing our doorbell. My father answers the door to see a scruffy looking stranger peering back at him. This fellow asks my father if he has any kind of work he could do around our house to earn enough money for a gallon of milk. My father, who was a very hard working guy in his day, told the man that he did not have any work for him.

The fellow left our porch, all the while he looked disheartened. My mother and I went on the porch just as we saw the man cross the street and disappear from sight. A few moments later, we saw the guy again down the road walking on the other side of the street. The poor man had his head down, as if he was looking for something.

My mother reached into her pocket and grabbed 4.00 out of her pocket and handed it to me. She did not have to say a word, I knew what she wanted me to do. I followed behind this man, trying to get his attention to give him the money. I finally caught up with him about half a block away, told him that I was sorry about the way my father acted, gave him the money and the last thing he said to me as I turned to walk home was "God bless you."

Earlier this morning, as my father was trying to awaken my mother from her recliner to go to bed(she works nights), she opened her eyes and saw a figure standing behind my father. She recognized the figure to be that of my long-deceased brother. She closed her eyes for a moment, then re-opened them, he was still there. She went on to bed because the sight of my brother has always had a calming effect on my parents.

This afternoon, while my mother and I were searching for a receipt for a piece of equipment that was broken, I ran across a sealed envelope that was from my father's attorney from last year. It contained one of my father's worker's compensation checks. My folks have been in such dire straits since my father was injured over 7 years ago at work. My mother and I truly believe that the fellow that came to the door looking for help was actually an angel telling us that he was there to help us because we helped someone else who was more needy than us.
