Jason Haunting My House

My husband and I were looking through the papers for a home so we could get a place of our own. We were living in a small three bedroom apartment with three kids. We found one add that we believed to be a mis-print. My husband said "Hey honey can you come here for a second?" I came over and the article read " Beautiful and charming victorian home with 5 bedrooms 2 bathrooms, a dining room and victorian style wrap-around porch in the country with lots of room for children! It could be yours for the price of $59,999."
I must've looked pretty shocked after hearing that because he said "Honey you there? helloo" I already had the phone in my hand when he started telling me the number. I called the realtor and she told me that the house was built back in the early 1800's and was destroyed by a fire that killed a husband a wife and their children. But the house had been beautifully re-done in the mid-late 1900's.
Considering that it was now 2006, I asked the woman who had owned it after the remodeling and she said no one wanted to buy the house. It remained empty and dormant, other then the care-taker who came by once a month to do a light turn over and to make any needed repairs. In the pit of my stomach I felt she was leaving something out but I ignored it and we set a date to look at the house.
My three children Matthew, Jennifer, and Ryan were all ready to get in the car for the long three hour ride from the city to the house. It was the longest three hours of my life. My husband gave me the lovely honor of driving while he comfortably slept in the passenger seat. The house from the outside was a sight to behold. It had beautiful blood red shutters and a chestnut brown exterior color.
We met the realtor at the door and she welcomed us in. As soon as I stepped into the house a feeling that something just wasn't right crept into me. I ignored the feeling though and listed as my (obviously happy) children were running around the upstairs. They were screaming this bedroom is mine and then arguing it is not, I called it first repeatedly. I reminded them once we rounded up the wild bunch, that we were only looking today.
I saw a flash of disappointment in their faces and my husband and I couldn't help but show our smile as we said in unison "But we'll take it." We began moving the next week and it took only 4 days. We successfully were moved into our new home. The children now all had their own rooms.
We had been living in the house for about three weeks when I noticed my daughter Jennifer started acting strangely. She has always been a food lover and a little chubby. But now I noticed she had been losing weight. I wasn’t worried about an eating disorder because she was only 9, but when I asked her what is wrong she told me ”Jason said I’m fat and I shouldn’t eat a lot.” I asked her “Honey who is Jason, is he a new friend you met in school?” She said “No he’s the little boy who used to live in my room.” I just figured he was a new imaginary friend and that it’s a phase she’d get over.
One day I was walking by her room when I heard a hushed conversation. I knew the boys had gone into town with their father so I listened intently. Jenny sounded as though she was crying and I heard a little voice say “ Your whole family is going to pay for staying in my house! I’ve told you repeatedly you need to tell them to get out or I’m going to kill them all!” Jenny said “ No please don’t hurt my family we love this house and my parents worked so hard for it they deserve it.” I opened the door immediately to see who was making threats to my daughter and I saw no one else in the room besides her.
I said “Are you ok? And she replied that she was “fine”. I left the room and closed the door. I began to think that maybe she was suffering from MPS, multiple personality syndrome. When my husband got home about 7:00 that night I had the kids take showers and get into bed, before I talked with him. “I’m getting the feeling that something isn’t quite right with Jenny.“ He said "I know what you’ve mean. I’ve noticed that as well recently.” We both agreed that we’d take her to a psychiatrist in the morning for an evaluation.
It was about 2:30 A.M when I noticed a strange smell in the room that I didn’t quite recognize. I quickly woke my husband and told him of the smell and he said it was smoke! We ran into the kitchen only to find the stove on fire! We gathered up all the children and tried to find out who started the fire. Ryan my oldest son (14 ) pointed out that the smoke detectors hadn’t gone off! We ran upstairs and downstairs and noticed that the batteries had been removed from all of them! I knew it could not have been Jenny because even with a chair she could not have reached them and the boys swore that they didn’t do it. So we assumed that maybe when we put them up, we forgot to put the batteries in.
It was 3:45 by the time we all went upstairs and got back into bed. I awoke to the same smell at 4:06. I got my husband up and we ran into the hallway and yelled to the children through all the smoke to get out of the house. I heard the bedroom doors opening and closing and little feet running down the stairs. We had discussed earlier that we would meet at the big oak tree about 60 feet away from the house. I grabbed my cellular phone and dialed 911. We were all at the tree or so I thought!
I noticed my son Ryan was not outside! I went hysterical and ran back INTO the house screaming his name! I found him in the living room unconscious on the floor! The fire was quickly spreading and I noticed the way I had come in was blocked by fire. I hurried over to the first floor window and noticed it was barred shut from the outside! So I picked my son up as best I could and carried him quickly through the flames. What happened next, I know only as I was told by my husband and the fire-fighters.
I awoke in the hospital to find my entire family around me…. Almost all of my family! Where’s Ryan I choked? My husband looked at me through tears and said “I’m sorry he didn’t make it” and he broke down crying. The fire-fighters believed the fire was caused by faulty wiring.
But I know the truth of what happened that night. My daughter's so called imaginary friend Jason was not imaginary. He was a little boy who lived in the home when it first caught fire. The part of the story my realtor had left out was that the previous owners had a 7 year old son Jason whom was deeply disturbed and he caused the fire that killed his entire family.
My husband, Jennifer and Matthew are currently staying in an apartment. We are still trying to get over the loss of my son Ryan and trying to get on with our lives.
