When I was eight years old, soon after I was baptized into my Christian denomination and had received the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, I had an interesting experience that confirmed to me the reality of that gift.

Late one night, I had crept out of my bedroom and was heading across the living room toward the kitchen. My mother had baked cookies earlier in the day, and my intention was to help myself to a few of them without permission from my parents.

As I made my way stealthily across the living room carpet, I heard a very soft, quiet voice ask me, "Should you really be doing this?"

It seemed to be coming from right beside my ear. Looking around, however, I saw no one. Moreover, it was definitely an adult voice, but not the voice of my mother or father, who were still sound asleep in their room.

Frightened, I hurried back into my room and went to sleep. I wasn't afraid of the voice nor its owner. No, I was quite certain that I knew whose voice it was. The Holy Ghost, I reasoned, had given me a warning. I find the precise wording very interesting. I wasn't told not to do it; I was simply asked if it was the right thing to do. The voice was so gentle, it was as if it was speaking directly to my soul (which I'm sure it was).

Since that time, I've heard a similar voice many times. Mostly, it simply calls my name when I'm about to do something morally questionable. I've sometimes attributed it to other people, but when I ask them why they were calling me, they deny having done so. The voice is always very faint, but still definitely audible.

I am glad the Holy Ghost will still talk to me. It reassures me that God hasn't given up on me, despite my many imperfections.
