Were They Angels?

These events take place on the prairies, Alberta, in the summer of 1984 when I was 18. My buddy Rick and I were heading to Edmonton, it was a little road trip just for the fun of it. It was about 2.00 am when Rick got tired and decided he should sleep for awhile. I didn’t have my license at the time so I couldn’t drive. We were nearing a small town called Alix near Red Deer when Rick spotted a small gravel rest area next to a farmer’s field to pull over and sleep.
Rick went to sleep right away, he was beat. I sat there smoking and staring up at the stars through the glass T roof pondering the universe, and not able to sleep. I couldn’t see much out side of the car as I looked around humming to the radio, bored. I could make out the barbed wire fence of the farmers field and what looked like a small stand of trees on the other side. As I sat there I caught something moving in the darkness and looked back at the trees, it looked like they were moving but thought it could have been the wind. I didn’t believe in the boogieman or anything spooky and wasn’t scared, I just noticed, that’s all.
To say I was a skeptic of anything paranormal was an understatement; such things never entered my rational mind. I also didn’t drink or do drugs of any kind. I noticed the trees moving again so I looked, they appeared to be taking on different shapes, it was weird, animals, and people….I looked away. I rationalized that shadows were playing tricks; I would reset my mind and then look again. All was fine, I wasn’t scared at this point, and I was a little fascinated actually. I looked again, the shape was a large monster, towering, crawling towards the car, a large looming animated shadow beast, and my heart almost came out of my chest. I ducked down and tried to wake Rick, I shook him violently, he was out like a light and exhausted and wouldn’t wake up. I tried to calm down and felt extremely foolish. I reasoned that the shadows and my imagination had gotten the better of me. I was glad Rick hadn’t woke up, I felt stupid, like a little child. I stayed hunkered down and not looking at the window of the car. I would just try and get to sleep, I wouldn’t look and my imagination wouldn’t play tricks I told myself.
I was like a child hiding under a magical blanket from the boogieman. If I didn’t look I would be ok. I felt stupid laying there waiting for sleep. Suddenly there was a light coming; I could see the inside of the car getting brighter. A car was coming down the highway with its high beams on. Wonderful I though, now I can look and the light will show my mind that it’s only a small stand of trees and all will be well and I can put this foolishness behind me. I waited till the lights got closer. I made my move and looked out the window and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. There were no trees where I had though there were, just empty field. Further into the field and to the left there were what looked like, and I can only describe as, soldiers, warrior looking people, standing in an oval formation, two rows, one kneeling in the front, and the others standing behind them, they were all looking straight ahead, not at me. The first row had their swords pointed to the ground, the row behind were holding theirs up. These beings were about ten feet tall each; they were huge and would dwarf a normal man. Their skin was a gold color, and they all had the same features.
All this was happening within the space of 90 seconds I would say, that’s how long the oncoming light from the car gave me. I opened the car door and got out and walked to the fence, I had to, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I actually leaned across the barbed wire fence to get a better look, to make sure of what I was seeing. I know what I saw, it was there, I was in my right mind. They paid me no mind and were still, silent, no movement, like statues, staring straight ahead.
As the light from the oncoming car began to dim I went back to our car and got in. I closed the door and locked it. I went right to sleep, just like that, even though I was totally freaked. I awoke to us driving down the highway the next morning. I told Rick the whole story and he thought I was nuts.
I don’t know what I saw that night, it doesn’t fit any category. It wasn’t a ghost, or a UFO, or anything that others claim to see. I will never forget it though.
