Floating Face of a Man as I Fell Asleep

When I was a small girl in the 60's, living in a brick house built by my father in the countryside of Northern Illinois, I quite often went to sleep watching the head of a man floating at the foot of my bed, usually about 6 1/2 feet high off the ground. This happened often.
I finally mentioned it to my mom, and at first she seemed to be concerned whether the man was in the flesh, and asked me how far off the ground the head seemed to be floating. I knew the height was taller than persons who would usually visit my bedside, such as my mother and father (who is quite tall), so I mentioned the face was at a height taller than most men. I'd say about 6 1/2 to 7 feet off the ground. Not that any of that matters too much - just a note.
This 'vision' usually if not always happened as I was about to float off to sleep. In fact, there was a 'floating' quality to the face, as well as to the feeling within my body (as I was saying, I was floating off to sleep). At times, I decided to see if the man was really there, in a number of different ways. I would close one eye, then both; the vision was still there, although I believe I was able to make it disappear altogether through sheer will, and I believe by simply 'waking up' out of my half slumber.
I remember, also, once staring down the figure, focusing my eyes very intensely on the face, and remember not liking it at first - I believe I was either afraid the man was going to disappear, thereby making it a figment of my imagination, &/or perhaps the figure began to get blurrier at first, but what I absolutely remember did happen is that a cross of bones appeared just below the head, as in a bowtie, or the typical cross and skull bones image - but when I looked up, the man was still there - unchanged but for the moment I thought I might have imaged him as a skull to go along with those bones. In any case, I was able to focus down on the bones, then up on the face and then pull them both into focus, as they floated above the foot of the bed.
I think my mom asked me if the man's face was always the same face, and I was not able to say it was always the same. It did become quite familiar looking, but the first few times it appeared, I was not able to say it was always the same. In fact, in my 5 - 6 yr old self (or younger), I thought it to be different the first several times, if not more. Anyway, this is the story of the floating man face, never written down before, that I have been holding within for over forty years.
