This is a story of a strange event that happened to me about 7 years ago. I have never suffered from hallucinations and was not under the influence of any intoxicating substance or medication. This is the only experience of its kind that I have ever had.

In 2003 I was in Taiwan working as an English teacher. I was walking home from work through a narrow street full of pedestrians in broad daylight. Down the street, I saw what appeared to be a black (African) woman on a bicycle. I was surprised to see this because, in my entire time in Taiwan, I had not seen any black people. I watched as she approached on her bicycle. As she got closer, I realized that something was seriously wrong with her face; it was more of a dark-purple color with what appeared to be skin lesions that reminded me of smollpox sores. Her hair was wild and unkempt...a huge bush of messy black hair. I was carrying an umbrella, and as she was about 10 or fifteen feet away, I moved the umbrella to prevent any eye-contact between us. I thought this to be a sick or dying woman to be disfigured like that and I didn't want her to catch me staring. She was the only person around on a bicycle and I never lost sight of her bike wheels and legs which I could see under the edge of my umbrella. As she was passing me, I could help but try to get another look at her. When I moved the umbrella out of the way, she was an Asian lady of about 55 or 60 years. Her skin was unusually light and her hair was pulled back in a neat bun. The moment I laid eyes on her, her "mind" presented itself to me as an enormous, powerful presence. She "spoke" directly to my mind something to this effect: "Ok, so you saw through my disguise...you are not part of my business here, so be smart and keep your mouth shut." I turned and watched her ride off. My ears rang and I felt tired. I didn't feel surprised or afraid...I believe I was in a mild state of shock. I went home and went to sleep immediately.

I debated for several weeks to tell someone about this experience. I finally told my landlady (a Taiwanese woman) and, surprisingly, she didn't make fun of me. I think the idea of the supernatural is much more accepted in Taiwan.

I don't think that what I saw was a ghost. If I had to guess, I would say a demon or a witch (although I don't believe in these things.)
