On May the 28 th of 2009 I had gone in to surgery to have a mastectomy due to cancer. This surgery went as expected. However, after being home for nine days an infection riddled my body with shaking, chilling, and then my breast became inflamed. My oldest sister drove me to Nashville, 85 miles away, in the middle of the night. By the time surgery was scheduled my other two sisters were there.

Before being transported to my second surgical room in less than ten days, I said a final farewell to all three sisters knowing that I wasn't coming back. I believed with everything I wasn't coming back. I had even ask the doctor to introduce me to the surgical staff because I didn't feel good about this surgery.

Sometime later I woke up. To my right was my youngest sister Denise sitting in a chair by the window. I remembered immediately what I had experienced but didn't know if I could tell and I don't recall when I told her, but I finally did.

Sometime between the time I was put to sleep and when I woke up from the surgery I had crossed over to what I like to call the other side, or better said, some place that I had never seen or been before.

The sky was the most beautiful blue not one cloud in the sky. The field from as far as I could see was in the most beautiful green wheat and the wind was blowing and the wheat was swaying. It was as if I was in a glass box viewing it all. The sun had to be out because it seemed the warmth was all around me. I would think it was about 2 o'clock for some odd reason. In front of me were two men standing in the wheat field maybe 50 feet away. Both men threw up their hands to wave but the grey haired man I knew. He was my neighbor who had recently passed with cancer. He waved and laughed and patted his legs just bent over in laughter. He was thrilled to see me! He had on jeans and a light blue plaid shirt that was ironed with the crease in the sleeves. He had gained his weight back. His hair was now grey and he wore it short. He looked like his old self! The other man after waving turned to the left not facing me. He was the other man's brother in law that I hadn't seen since I was a child. He was tall and slim with brown pants on. I was thrilled to see my neighbor! His death, his illness, broke all our hearts.

Now, nearly two years later, I long for the warmth and beauty of the place I was when I viewed what I consider paradise for a country girl.

To my friend that I visited in the wheat field....just as soon as I was able to get around I went to your family and told them I had seen you, and you were well.......on the other side!
