Fear Not

I was doing National Service in the SA Medical Service and had been hitch-hiking from Pretoria to Cape Town. I got as far as Bloemfontein, and stood there for a number of hours. It was about 20:00, and it was raining cats and dogs. Suddenly, just after a gust of wind blew my beret off, I clearly heard a voice saying: "Fear not, for I am with thee." When I picked up my beret, it stopped raining. A minute or so afterwards, a car stopped and I got a lift all the way to Cape Town (900 km further).

On another occasion, I was hitch-hiking back from leave. I prayed for a lift and started walking. After an hour or so, I was chilled to the bone and dead tired. I got underneath a road bridge, rolled myself into my blanket and prepared to spend the night under the bridge.

A voice (the same as the previous time? I think so) said, once more perfectly clearly: "Now you're making things difficult. You ask for a lift and then lie down under a road bridge!"

Shamed, I got up. I remember saying "Sorry, Lord!" Before I had my blanket properly rolled again, a black car coming from Oudtshoorn on its way to Witbank, stopped. Friendly old folks, they took me all the way to Witbank and dropped me off at the Pretoria road. From there, I mmediately got a lift and arrived at the base in time for kit inspection.

I am reminded of the text: He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways!"
