this story is about my mother who almost died of liver cancer in the early 1960's. she often told us this amazing story to let us children know that there are always angel's looking out for each and every one of us. my mother was very ill and was in a hospital in glendale california, she had 4 children. my father's relatives had to come and take care of us while she was in the hospital. she would tell us that she was very ill and had had two exploratory surgeries and the doctors had told my father that she would not live very long. my father had to make a decision to have her moved to the basement of the hospital where all the terminally ill patients use to be kept. that usually meant that there was really no hope for you and everyone was basically ready for you to die. but, my mother was a very devoted catholic and always prayed about not wanting to die at such a young age and leaving her husband and kids behind.
one night while she was about to have another surgery to clean out her system, a priest came to her and held her hand and spoke to her about how she was and about what she wanted. she told him about us kids and that she did not want to leave her kids because we were so young. the priest told her, "maria, you will not die and you will not have surgery tomorrow." he sat awhile longer and they prayed together. my mother would tell us that he was very kind and had a beautiful face and smile. the next day before surgery, my mother who was filled with tubes in her stomach felt a warmth thru all her body, she said that all the tubes started coming out of her body and all the infection just seemed to run out of her. the nurses did not know what to do, they called the doctors and had to clean her bed several times during that day. she laughed about it when she told us because after one day the infection seemed to be drained out of her body, she told us later that that night she was very hungry. my mother asked the nurses for the priest who came to see her, she wanted to thank him for the prayer
she knew and i know in my heart that that was her angel of mercy. my mother lived to be 72 years old. why? because she really did have faith and because a beautiful angel dressed as a priest came to help her.
