Guardian Angel
From: Story type: Angel Location: Reed Creek, Georgia Source: Form Submission
This story took place in about 1944 or 1945 in rural north east Georgia and happened to my father. My mom and dad had not been married long and were living with my mom's mother and father in a little place called Reed Creek, Georgia. Back then it was little more than a wide spot in the road with a church and two country stores side by side. One store was operated by the wife and one was operated by her husband. The reason for two stores was that the wife refused to sell alcoholic beverages and told her husband that if he was going to sell alcohol he would have to open his own store.....which he did. Back in those days everyone knew everyone else in the community (most were related to each other!) and people looked out for one another.
My dad and my mother's brother, my Uncle Ed, had a small electrical business in Hartwell a small town about 7 miles from Reed Creek. One night my dad was driving home from work from Hartwell to Reed Creek in a torrential rainstorm. Back in those days all the roads from Hartwell to Reed Creek were dirt roads and there were no modern bridges either, only wood planks nailed onto large log timbers laid across streams and creeks with no side rails. My father made his way down the treacherous dirt road that was quickly becoming too muddy to travel but he desperately wanted to get home to my mom when he saw what he thought was a woman in a white gown run across the road in front of him. He stopped the car to see if one of the local neighbors was in some kind of trouble. When he stepped around to the front of the car he saw that he was about to cross a little wooden bridge that was only inches away the front tires of the car. But the torrential rains had turned the small creek into a raging ravine and the bridge was completely washed away.
He looked and looked for the woman who ran out in front of
his car but could find no one. Years later when he told me
this story he felt that it was his Guardian Angel looking
over him and preventing him from plunging into the ravine.
