Dreams

My father was an alcoholic for most of my entire childhood, which of course left me with some conflicting emotions about him. We lived in a tiny apartment from which we were eventually evicted, and our furniture was cheap and shabby.

As an adult I began having dreams that the apartment was on fire and that my father was drunk and passed out in a particular chair. I would try to get him out of the house, screaming at him and crying. I would wake up with tears running down my face.

By the time I was an adult my family had moved out of that apartment and other people had moved in. One New Year"s Day a fire destroyed the entire structure; a woman and baby were killed.

I never had the dream again.
