ok, i was reluctant to do this, but here it goes. i was staying at a friend's house, which was really old, about a hundred years old, in fact. i was alone, as my friend and husband at the time had gone out. my husband serviced cash registers for convenience stores, and was on call that night, so this was around midnight, and they weren't due back any time soon. i had my friend's dog, and i had gone to bed in his room when all of the sudden the dog jumped up and ran to the bedroom door to stare into the living room. this is a very quiet dog who never barks or growls, and would lick a burglar to death if one should appear.
as she stared into the living room, all of the hair on her back stood straight up, and she began to growl. she was staring to the left of the living room from the bedroom, which would be the direction of the kitchen. off the kitchen, there was a laundry room, which had a back door. the back door had a latch on the inside, one of the old fashioned eye hook kind. i was afraid, but knew i had just checked the backdoor before bed, as i was out in the country and staying alone, i had checked all the doors and windows. but the dog's fear rubbed off on me. i had already been trying to ignore noises all night long, passing them off as the sounds of an old house settling in the cool night air. i got the dog back in the bedroom, and tried to go to sleep, but it began to turn so cold, i finally got up to check the heater. it was an old gas heater mounted on the wall. it was running, but the house was freezing.
the dog was still acting strangely, and i was still hearing things. i began to get very nervous, so i thought i'd feel better if i did a walk through of the house. when i went into the living room, i turned left to go into the kitchen, then looked into the laundry room. the back door was standing wide open. the only way to open it was to unhook the latch from the inside. but i had already checked the whole house over before i went to bed.
i believe it was a ghost, because we had heard knocking sounds before, that would knock on the wall behind the fireplace as many times as you knocked first. if you knocked five times, you would hear a knock five times back. doesn't sound very scary now, but believe i was scared that night! my friend has since died, and my husband and i divorced, but are still friends.
i told them of the happenings when they got home. that was six years ago, i am now 25. i was 19 then.
