I am a RN that works in a large hospital that was established in the 19th century. The unit that I work in is a step down post operative surgical floor. When a patient is transferred from the surgical intensive care unit they come to 5 southeast. Before they come the SICU nurse will call a report to the 5se nurse to give them needed information to help with that particular patient's care.

One day I took report on a particular elderly lady that had had some major-type surgery. The SICU nurse told me that every time she walked into the patient's room the patient would exclaim," Oh, you scared him away!" When the nurse asked who she was talking about the patient would state that her husband had been there to see her. The nurse would then try to re-orient that patient by telling her that no one else was in the room (thinking the patient was confused). The patient just smiled and continued to insist that her husband was there.

Now a little background: the husband had been dead for several years!

Anyway, I just put it down as a confused little old woman. When she arrived on my unit I went into her room to assess her and get her settled. As I leaned over her to listen to her lungs I felt a pressure on my left shoulder as if someone was pushing their hand on me to lean over and look. Before I could look over my shoulder to see who it was the patient smiled and said," There's my husband!". The pressure on my shoulder increased, but I couldn't see anyone there!

While the patient smiled I "talked "with her husband and informed him that his wife was all right and everything would go well. I never felt his presence again and the patient never mentioned him whenever I came into the room. Could it be he was concerned and just wanted to make sure she would be O.K.? I know I took great comfort in knowing that love can continue beyond the grave.
