The Mysterious Camper
From: Art Counselor () Story type: Ghost Location: Pleasant Hill Family Camp Source: Form Submission
This is a true story. I know some of the stories submitted to this site are not true, however THIS story is true. It all began many years ago when I was a counselor at a family summer camp. The other counselors and I had stayed up late after a long day of scouring toilets and cleaning cabins.
Always the night-owl, I was the last to leave the mess hall. It was 1:00 in the morning when I finally decided to finish my cup of hot cocoa. The night was clear and pleasantly cool. After locking up the mess hall, I slowly descended the hill and began walking the quarter mile leading to the staff cabins. One lamp atop a sixteen-foot pole provided light to guide my footing. I looked up into the starlit sky and breathed a heavy sigh, so happy was I to be at the camp and walking alone. When I fixed my eyes again in front of me, I noticed a young woman walking towards me. She was approximately eighteen years of age. Her hair was long and brunette. She wore cutoff jeans and a striped halter top. As a camp counselor, it was my responsibility to greet all campers with a helpful word. "Hi! How are you?" I asked pleasantly. She did not speak and so I assumed she did not hear me. She walked closer, her expression without emotion. When she was within ten feet of me, I again made an attempt to be friendly.. "Heh, can I help you in some way?" She walked several more steps towards me and then -- mysteriously -- disappeared! You cannot imagine how pertified I was in that moment, how confused and bewildered! I ran swiftly to my cabin and woke all my fellow counselors up, raving over and over, "I saw something weird, I saw something REALLY weird!" One of the camp owners later told me a story about a young woman who had been murdered while camping on the island in the center of the lake. This news sent chills down my spine. To this day, I think of her and pray her soul has found rest in the next world.
