Red Eyes

My friends the Martins have lived in an old farmhouse in the country for about 20 years now, and it has always had a strange history associated with it. The house is ominously perched on a large hill; its wooden two story frame has been washed out to an odd black and gray color over the years.

Evidence that the house is built on an area where the Anasazi Indian tribe (an ancient tribe who left ruins all over New Mexico) lived is everywhere. You can just walk out over the property and pick up arrowheads and patterned pottery shards.

In any case, from the moment it was built it had air of negativity about it. The teenage son of the first owners had tried to burn it down and then kill himself(both which he didn't succeed in doing).

Even though when I first saw the house I was unaware of its history, I noticed right away that it had a warped feeling to it. Its long hallways were always cold, clammy, and shadowy. It was carpeted by rugs with strange and almost maniacal red and orange swirling patterns. On the outside, at night, the house seems to change; its old corrupt wooden walls would turn black. It seemed to watch you.

When my friend Jacqueline was growing up there she said that the house had been alive with strange occurrences. Many of them seemed to be centered around her little brother. He claimed that a dark shadow with glowing eyes would follow him around the house. He also described waking up at night with a dark figure standing over his bed. Whatever it was, the basement seemed to be the scariest place in the house. Finally, their mother who was a staunch Catholic, decided to have the house excorcised by a priest. The problems appeared to stop after that.

I had moved out of state for a while and hadn't seen my friend for a few years until I moved back and ran into her. One night in mid October I went over to her place to watch movies. They had converted an old boiler room in the basement into the tv room. Stuck in the corner of the rest of the basement, it was a small cement room with no windows

We were getting ready to watch the movie with some other people. The lights were all off, and our other friends were trying to get the tv plugged in the other room.

Jennifer and I were jokingly laughing about how spooky it was because it was so damn pitch black in there you couldn't see your hand in front of you own face. She was telling me about how when she was little, they would dare each other to spend the night down here - it was so dark and scary they called it the "devil room".

Suddenly after saying those words "devil room", she said, "Wait a minute what's that?". She pointed out to me that up in a top corner of the room near the ceiling a pair of large red cat shaped eyes were staring out at us, glowing. They had no pupils, just a dull red dementia. At first we laughed, maybe out of nervousness or surprise, and then we realized we had no idea where they were coming from. Just when it was starting to sink in that we might be having some sort of occult experience, our friends walked back in and the eyes faded slowly out.

Panicked, we turned all the lights on, searching in the corner where the eyes had manifested and found nothing. In fact, the corner was void of shelves and was just plain, empty cement.

The next thing we thought was that maybe some sort of electrical reflection (from a smoke detector or whatever) may have been the cause. There was no electrical appliance in that room with any sort of red light coming from it. Finally, suspicious and skeptical till the end, we thought maybe it was a prank. But,from the angle our two friends were at out the in other room there was no physical way for them to send a light reflection into the boiler room.

As far as I know, noone had died in the house. My only guess is that maybe an Indian spirit or demon haunts it. There are stories about manitou and other malevolent spirits that abound in New Mexico. Perhaps whatever haunts the walls of the Martin house is an ancient thing.

Needless to say, I couldn't sleep at all that night even when I was away from the house and safe in my own.
