Husband's Mother Pays Us a Visit

my mother in law died one evening last may in a hospital. the whole family was there, and as normal, we were all very grief stricken, and in a state of shock. my husband decided that he did not want to leave his father in their house all alone, so we had my brother pick up our dogs from our house to take them home with him, and we stayed at his parent's house. the next morning, we went to make the funeral arrangements, run some additional errands, and tried to no avail to get his father to eat something.

that evening, we went to our home to get the proper attire for the wake and funeral as we were returning to his parent's house to stay with his dad, who was taking everything very hard. my mother in law, who was always very sickly, had never been to our house, and would always apologize to me, saying when she was better, she would come over, and see our house. she felt pretty bad about never coming over, but we understood.

while i was ironing my husband's shirt to wear the next day in the basement, i heard someone walking upstairs in the living room. i looked under the clothes line, and could see my husband's feet. i heard them walking from the front door, and stop in front of the fireplace, walk to another table, then thru the dining room. my husband thought i was hearing things, and told me the blinds in the windows were making that noise. the windows were all shut and i told him this, then i heard the walking noises going into our bedroom, back out, into the bathroom, and then into the spare bedroom. it was at this time, my husband believed me, and he grabbed a metal pipe of some sort, and started walking upstairs. when we reached the top, the basement door slammed in his face. it slammed so hard, he had a hard time re-opening it, and in that moment, we thought we were locked in the basement.

i believe that my mother in law came home with us to see our house since she was never able to in life, because as i was hearing the walking noises, they paused at every "point of interest" in my house. they stopped where we have pictures hanging, or knick knacks displayed, went in every room. it was like someone who has never been to your house before will stroll around taking everything in.

at the funeral, i said goodbye, and that i would miss her, but then i told her in case she was wondering why she hasn't seen anybody that has passed on before her, it was because they were on the other side of the light. i think she went.
