I decided to share my story with others because I hope that it will give someone a little hope. My story might not sound like much to you, but it meant a lot to me at the time and still does. So here it goes... I joined the military in '97 and was stationed in Utah. I was very close to my Nona (that is Italian for grandma and is what I called her because she was Italian). Nona had been sick for a while so when I got the call from my mom that she was in the hospital I was not surprised. I flew to Ohio with my husband and (at the time) 5 month old daughter. I expected Nona to be gone by the time we arrived. She was not. She held on for a couple of more days. When I was growing up Nona lived with us and we used to joke around with each other. I would stick my tounge at her and she would stick hers out at me. Well, as children often do I thought Nona would be there forever. I always joked with her that she could not die without my permission. When I arrived at the hospital she was in a coma. I "showed" her my daughter (whom I had named after her and her mother), and sat for hours holding her hand. She was admitted on Tuesday morning. On Friday I could not stand it anymore. I stood up and bent over and kissed her forehead, then whispered in her ear..."You can die now Nona. Go to heaven and be my angel. I love you." I gave her one more kiss and left. I drove home and called my supervisor to tell her to extend my leave. I had put my daughter on the couch beside me. She was still in her car seat and was sound sleep as most kids are after a good car ride. My husband was sitting across from us on a recliner. The t.v. was not on, and we were not talking, we were just sitting quietly. All of a sudden my daughter (5 months old remember) woke up, smiled, and stuck her tounge out at me!!!! Then she smile again and went back to sleep. I thought that it was strange, but all I could do was smile and stick mine out at her. About 5 minutes later my sister called me from the hospital to tell me that Nona had past away about 5 minutes earlier! I looked down at my daughter and she was still sound asleep. I believe and know that Nona came to me to say good-bye through my daughter. She had waited until I gave her my permission, and then said one last good-bye..... I love you Nona.
