The Ball
From: Story type: Ghost Location: London, Kentucky Source: Form Submission
This is one of many occurrences I have had during the span of about 26 years on a piece of land my mother owns. When I was 9 years old in the 4th grade, we had a boy transfer out of the slow class into our class at school. I think he was a couple of years older than the rest of us and most of the kids in our class just picked on him. At first I felt sorry for him, but I found out he was just lonely and a nice person.
During the rainy weather that year, the teacher said we could bring a small toy to play with inside during recess time. I started bringing my favorite game to school, bobby jacks. Well, Claude, had no idea on how it was played at all. I started teaching him all that I know about the game and he was getting pretty good. He could make it all the way up to threesies without a mistake and was trying to talk his parents into getting him a set to practice with at home.
At home Mom had moved around the beds and I was sleeping in a twin bed in the dining room. I couldn't handle sleeping with my sister she snored too loud.
I woke up later in the night. It was cold and raining outside, so I just laid there trying to go back to sleep. I heard someone in the kitchen and thought it was just someone coming in from work. They walked through the kitchen and I noticed it sounded like they was bouncing a ball. When whoever it was made it into the dining room, I recognized the sound was a small ball like a bobby jack ball. They didn't wear tennis shoes it was more like dress shoes. He walked over to the bed, stopped for a minute bouncing the ball. Then he turned and walked over to the dresser bouncing that ball. When he walked back over to the bed and stopped the next time I just couldn't stand it any longer. I jumped up and spun around to see who it was. The only problem was there was no one to be seen. Needless to say, I did not hang around to see if "he" moved or was going to move. When I got up the next morning everyone was quite and I noticed they
were acting strange toward me. I just wrote it off as Mom telling them that I heard a ghost. When I got to school, I went looking for Claude to see if he was going to play bobby jacks with me. I asked some of the kids if they knew where he was and that was when I found out that he was riding his bike down the road the day before. A car came up behind him hit him and ran. It threw him into the ditch and killed him. In some people's opinion it was him coming to say goodbye.
