according to folklore, there is a ghost of a woman who appears as a hitch hiker on the old lewiston grade in lewiston , idaho.

this story was told to me by an old indian woman who said her brother had experienced it.

she said that her brother was driving home from a pow wow in lewiston when he saw a woman dressed in old indian clothes standing alongside the road. figuring it was just one of the many ceremonial dancers he stopped to pick her up.

she got into his car and he tried to talk to her but she was silent. looking back toward the road he drove a bit further and for some reason looked down at her feet and saw they were the hooves of an elk, frightened he looked at her and where there had once been a pretty young girl there was now an old crone.

the man, in fear for his life , looked back at the road in order not to drive off the grade and when he looked back she was gone...

there have been many experiences w/the elk womans ghost and many ppl still believe she haunts the old grade, which has been closed for a few years now due to disrepair. young people still go up the grade in hopes of sighting the elk woman and possibly picking her up.
