I live in Fayetteville Arkansas in the woods and not far from us use to live an elderly couple. They lived in this old run down shack for a house with chickens and dogs all over the place. For the man to make a little money he would let people dump trash onto his once lovely wooded acres for cash. Somewhere among the trash and near the old shack is a nearly forgotten small grave of a baby. It has no proper headstone, only some local rocks to mark it's grave. No name, no date of any kind, just the knowledge of a lone little grave of a baby. This wasn't their child, but the lady did look after the grave the best she could, until one day the man passed away and she was left alone.

She moved into town and the land was cleared of all trash, the old shack was torn down, the acres divided up and finally sold off. I was up there not long ago to see what has become of the forgotten little grave. I've noticed that much excavating has been done to the landscape. I could hardly recognize where the old shack stood. Many trees were uprooted and bulldozed into large piles against other trees. As I recalled, the little grave was near a large tree not far from the old shack. There were a number of possible places the little grave could be located, but all the excavating has erased any signs of the little grave. I took a roll of snapshots and as I was standing in the middle of the Arkansas woods thinking about the little grave, the sun was going down and with the evening shadows came the cry of a small voice. It sounded much like the cry of a baby. It sent chills right through me because I knew it was the disembodied voice of this lost lost babe in the woods. The sound seem to be coming from everywhere and yet nowhere.

After a quiet prayer I left that place. Those woods are still haunted by the cry of a baby. Deep in the Arkansas woods a lone little grave of a baby remains lost and abandoned. It's cries can still be heard echoing through the hills.
