Three Ghost Encounters
From: Kevin Price (KP666@aol.com) Story type: Ghost Location: Southeastern U.S. Source: Form Submission
My siblings and I have all had "ghostly" encounters of one kind or another.
The first happened to my older brother, Chris. He and his boy scout troop were camping in the woods near Cowpens Battlefield in South Carolina. A Revolutionary War battle took place here. Chris was sent to a nearby creek to fill up everyone's canteens. as he was bending over to fill one of them, he felt a presence. He looked up and saw the black shape of a person floating a foot or two above the ground on the other side of the creek. He simply stared at it in shock for a few moments until it vanished rapidly into the trees.
My younger sister, Kim went to college at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. Her encounters were with a famous ghost of a little girl named Gracie, who has haunted Tatnall Hall (a dormitory) for many decades. Kim and several of her roommates saw the ghost on many occasions, running through the halls, staring at them while they slept, and even looking through the clothes in their closets. She usually disappeared soon after she was noticed and rarely attempted contact. Although the girl never caused any harm, her presence in the dorm was very unnerving to my sister and the apparition seemed unfriendly and perhaps jealous of the students.
My experience happened at Foster's Tavern in Spartanburg, South Carolina (my hometown). The old house is a historic landmark, dating back to colonial times. George Washington is said to have stayed there once. Many paranormal events have been witnessed there over the years, stemming from the hanging suicide of a boarder in the attic. Menacing voices have been heard in the attic, footsteps have been heard on the stairs, and the sounds of horse's hooves have been heard on the roof. Once one of the owners, while giving a piano lesson in the back room (which is near a small family cemetery in the backyard), saw the decayed hand of a presumably dead person reaching through the back door, only to disappear when approached.
In the 6th grade, I was doing a report on local ghosts and interviewed the female college student who the house had been passed to. I brought a tape recorder with me and did a test ("check, check, one, two") in the house. Everything seemed normal and the interview was uneventful until I returned home to transcribe it.
My voice could be heard clearly, but the lady's voice (a direct descendant of the original owners) was garbled, sounding almost like the white noise of a t.v. with no signal. This happened with every one of her responses, even though she had been speaking very clearly. Towards the end of the recording, there were many shrill sounds, like when you get too close to a microphone (the recorder was untouched and on a table) and there were faint female moaning sounds, blending in with my voice. Very eerie stuff. Yes, the recorder and tape were in perfect working condition and no, the woman was not a ghost (if you thought that's where I was going with this) and was as baffled as I was. I made copies of it for her and for Wofford College, who were supposedly going to analyze it, but I never heard anything more.
