It was a hot day on the beach at the west coast of Australia in 1978. Some friends had unexpectedly called in to go to the beach with my wife and I. I really did not feel like going although I normally loved the beach and swimming in the Indian ocean. However I did go, not wanting to be a spoil-sport.

When there I ran into the sea and dived into the first breaker only to break my neck on the shallow sand underneath it. I heard a PHHEWW-noise and could not move anything. I was floating face-down but I wasn't worried. I was immersed in the most incredibly blue colour and was totally at peace and serene - until my wife lifted my head from the water and I was in the 'real' world of strong pain and a totally changed life lay ahead of me.

Perhaps not quite a near death experience with all its bells and whistles but, for me, a taste of something out of this world nevertheless.

A 'funny' thing too: A week or so before breaking my neck (I have had quadriplegia ever since) I lay on my back on the bed and, seemingly for no reason, imagined for a moment what it would be like not to be able to move my body at all. Precognition? I had never come across any paralyzed people at that time.

I'd be interested in hearing any similar accounts.
