Where to start with spirit guides

I want to know where to start..I admit i am a little scared of all this..but i feel im not alone..and i dont think this thing would harm me...I dont think.
think of this as spirit guides for dummies lol.

I would personally start with meditation, or asking them to make them selves known in your dreams (that second one I have yet to hear of someone it's worked for personally but through others I have heard good things about it)
